Not All Press-On Nails Are Created Equal: Why it's all about the base
Behind the scenes at CandyBox Nails — and why the foundation of a beautiful manicure is just as important as the design.
When I first started making press-on nails, I used the same type of plastic nail tips that many nail technicians use for Gel-X extensions.
They were affordable, readily available, and came in a variety of pre-shaped and pre-sized options. At the time, they seemed like the perfect starting point.
But as I spent more time creating nails, experimenting with different materials and refining my designs, I realised something important: a nail tip designed for building extensions isn't necessarily the best foundation for a reusable press-on nail.
And that discovery changed the way I approached making CandyBox nails.
Understanding the Difference: Gel-X Tips vs Press-On Nail Bases
Gel-X-style nail tips are designed to be used as part of a nail extension system.
In a typical application, gel is placed inside the tip before it's pressed onto the natural nail and cured. The gel helps fill the space between the tip and the natural nail, creating a secure extension.
Because of this, the tips are often relatively thin and shaped with the finished extension in mind.
That makes sense for their intended purpose.
However, when you're creating a press-on nail, the requirements are different.
A press-on needs to function as a finished nail in its own right. It needs to look beautiful, feel comfortable and provide a reliable foundation for the design.
The shape, thickness and structure of the base all matter.
Why Nail Shape Matters More Than You Think
One of the biggest things I noticed was the difference between the shape of an artificial nail extension and the shape of a natural nail.
They're not necessarily the same.
Many extension tips are designed to create the appearance of a sculpted nail, rather than closely following the natural contours of the nail underneath.
For press-on nails, I wanted to pay more attention to that relationship.
After all, a beautiful design is only part of the experience. How a nail sits against your natural nail can make a real difference to how comfortable it feels.
A well-chosen base should complement the natural nail rather than relying on the design alone to create a polished result.
The Importance of Thickness and Structure
Another important consideration was thickness.
Thin extension tips can work brilliantly when they're used as intended, particularly when they're reinforced as part of a gel extension system.
But a standalone press-on nail has different demands.
I wanted a base that offered a more substantial foundation for the finished product, without making the nail unnecessarily bulky.
The goal wasn't simply to create a thicker nail.
It was to find a better balance between strength, comfort and a natural-looking finish.
Because the quality of a press-on nail shouldn't be judged only by how pretty it looks in a photograph.
It should also be considered in terms of how it's constructed.
Why I Became More Selective About My Nail Bases
As CandyBox developed, I became increasingly particular about the materials and foundations I used.
What had originally seemed like a small technical detail became an important part of my product development process.
I began looking beyond convenience and affordability, paying closer attention to the characteristics of the nail base itself.
Was it the right shape for a press-on?
Did it provide the structure I wanted?
Would it allow me to create the kind of finished manicure I was proud to put the CandyBox name on?
These were the questions that started influencing my decisions.
Beautiful Nails Start With the Right Foundation
At CandyBox, I want press-on nails to offer more than a quick alternative to a salon appointment.
I want them to feel thoughtfully made, from the design you see to the foundation underneath.
That means being selective about the nail bases I work with, continually refining the products and paying attention to details that aren't always obvious at first glance.
Because sometimes, the most important part of a beautiful manicure is the part you don't immediately notice.
And for me, that's where quality begins.
